How it all began
After several years of attempting to conceive and enduring multiple rounds of IVF, Nyomi and Zane were blessed with twin boys, Zen and Pax. After achieving their decade-long dream of starting a family, Nyomi’s pregnancy was fraught with risks which led to an early hospitalisation at just 27 weeks to John Flynn Private Hospital. The twins arrived at 36 weeks, with them remaining in the hospital for an additional month.
Reflecting on those events, Nyomi wished that they had stayed longer. From the moment Pax was born Nyomi had concerns. Concerns that were repeatedly dismissed by the paediatrician despite Pax having to be resuscitated at birth, weighing in at half his brothers’ weight, and showing abnormal colouring. Finally after three long months in the hospital they could head home as a complete family. Their long-awaited dream had come true.
Pax suddenly fell ill on June 3, 2018. A frantic ambulance call and later experiencing a seizure on the way to hospital had led to an immense feeling of fear and worry for Nyomi and Zane. At the hospital, doctors ran tests with consideration to various diagnoses such as meningitis and even questioned if Pax had been exposed to the herpes virus. Amidst the confusion and anxiety, the truth behind Pax’s condition had remained elusive.
Two days later, a doctor made the shocking accusation that someone had harmed Pax – alleging Shaken Baby Syndrome without concrete evidence. This baseless accusation shifted focus away from finding the actual medical issue plaguing Pax. Shortly after, Pax suffered a nine-minute seizure, pushing him into the ICU where he fought for his life. The department of Child Safety then intervened, demanding that Nyomi’s rights as a mother be relinquished. Under duress and legal representation she complied fearing being separated from her ailing child.
Over the next four and a half months, strict regulations prevented both Nyomi and Zane from being alone with their new born babies and Nyomi’s mother stepping in as a constant presence. Zane faced false charges stemming from Pax’s medical emergency, leading to a harrowing legal battle that drained the new family’s resources and even forced them to sell their newly renovated family home.
After three tumultuous years in April 2021, Pax was diagnosed with Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST), a life-threatening condition caused by an inherited blood clotting disorder from his paternal lineage, unbeknownst to Nyomi and Zane at the time. All charges against Zane were dropped by August 2021. Shockingly, it was revealed that crucial blood tests and findings indicating a blood disorder were overlooked by the doctor who first attended Pax in 2018. This negligence could have had fatal consequences for Nyomi and Zane’s son.
